The 1/5 (20%) sexual assault/rape statistic is indeed incorrect. It was never meant to apply to the US as a whole, only to the two universities where the research was done (and even there with big caveats, since the response rate was dismal).

The authors of the study had to publish a clarification:

As two of the researchers who conducted the Campus Sexual Assault Study from which this number was derived, we feel we need to set the record straight. Although we used the best methodology available to us at the time, there are caveats that make it inappropriate to use the 1-in-5 number in the way it’s being used today, as a baseline or the only statistic when discussing our country’s problem with rape and sexual assault on campus.

A comprehensive DOJ study “Rape And Sexual Assault Among College-Age Females, 1995-2013” has found that:

Across all types of violent crime, female students had a lower victimization rate than nonstudents (table 2). For the period 1995-2013, the rate of violent victimization was 1.6 times higher for nonstudents (73.1 per 1,000) than students (46.3 per 1,000). For both students and nonstudents, the rate of rape and sexual assault was lower than the rate of aggravated and simple assault, but higher than the rate of robbery

The particular stats for sexual assaults and rape of females of ages 18-24 in the study were:

- 0.61% among students (1 in 164)
- 0.76% among the general population (1 in 132)

While the percentages are not 100% reliable (there are caveats in any study), they are at the very least useful for comparison between students and nonstudents.

Has Fox covered any rape case that wasn’t false accusations?

That didn’t involve a young white blonde?

re: #1 Nyet

That seems to be correct. However, one in five woman overall have been raped, or the victim of an attempted rape.

And when I was in college back in the 80’s - before there was anything close to the awareness about date rape (heck, before even the term “date rape” had entered the lexicon), there were several rumors of assaults like the now discredited UVA one at frat houses, one of which I believe to have been true (I knew the young girl involved, as well as one of the alleged perps - he was bragging about it in the dorm a few days later. What a great guy!). So even though the Rolling Stone story about UVA fell apart, it doesn’t necessarily mean nothing happened, and that house in question is 100% innocent. Unfortunately, only the victim and the perps know exactly what happened that night at UVA, and many other nights in frat houses across the country.

It is also regrettable that members of this frat ended up being falsely accused. I also saw that happen during my college days, and even back then just being accused of rape was quite a millstone to hang around a guy’s neck, and I suspect this frat will sue RS, and RS will write a big check to make this end as quickly as possible. But the long term effect of this story is that it will probably deter future real victims from coming forward, as if that wasn’t hard enough already.

The way to come forward is “all in”. Cooperate with the police. Do not delay. Preserve evidence. Go for the throats of your attackers, in other words. Righteous anger is the mood of the day, not shame.
