Freelance photographer Justin Majeczky of Varient3 Productions was shooting time-lapse photos of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco when the missile entered his frame. He immediately stopped shooting the time-lapse and used his camera to record some video:

The military says the $37 million Trident II (D5) missile was fired from a submarine off the coast of Southern California, and that it will be doing military tests through November 12th, 2015.

When I saw another video about this the other night I couldn’t make sense of it.

Now I’m guessing that atmospheric conditions were just right for the missile’s engine to create a contrail. That’s the blue straight line. The cone shaped cloud was caused by the missile going through the sound barrier.

At least that’s my current hypothesis.

Can someone explain why its a good idea to do a missile test, with no warning, in a heavily populated area? I thought that is why they have bases like Roswell.

Submarine launched ballistic missile.Probably impacted Kwajalean Islands with a dummy warhead. You can bet that was launched from well offshore, just put on a show for a huge area as it flew higher. And there was warning hence the temporary no fly zone.

Actually kind of beautiful. So was this some kind of publicity stunt? Obviously this test was meant to be seen. What is the message supposed to be?
