Only 5 votes so far, including mine? Then again, it hasn’t been so much as 1/2 an hour yet. Here’s hoping this poll ends with more interesting results than 4 white & 1 alien.

(but srsly, why is an obvious joke an option in this poll?)

So if people feel uncomfortable with the question they have an out. I did allow two choices for people as well.

As most of the regulars know I’m half white & half hispanic, however I chose Middle Eastern as that’s what I get pigeon-holed as because of my complexion & hijab. Many Americans don’t know one ethnicity from another when it comes to Middle Eastern people, but most Middle Easterners—especially Arabs—usually think I’m Egyptian or Moroccan and start speaking to me in Arabic.

I’m actually an alien from Tau Ceti (same as Obama) but the question was how does society view/treat you, so I checked “white-European.”

By the way, I used the term blend instead of the common ‘mixed race’ term because that term has always bugged me.

I went with ‘Homo sapiens’. Although I don’t care much for that name.

We should be using ‘tool using man’ rather than ‘thinking man’. As a species we’re great at creating and using tools. At thinking, not so much.

See anthropogenic climate change and the ‘controversy’ around it as an excellent example.

I disagree. Homo habilis used tools, hence its species’ name. Also for all our stupidity, we homo sapiens are far more rational and far more capable than our prehistoric ancestors.

I’ve been thinking lately that given our origins, ie dirt + natural selection, we lucked out really. Because, imperfect though our species obviously is, psychopaths are in a minority, and goodness is actually a thing, even if there isn’t enough of it. On the face of it, it seems like it would have been SO easy for that not to have been the case, for intelligence to have arisen first in something for whom empathy was as foreign as a bats sonar is to us. Like Ted Cruz, for example.

They might have used tools but our species has taken tool use to a level undreamed of by habilis. We have tools that make tools that make more tools. But we, as a species, have trouble imagining where that tool use will lead and tend to disbelieve those who to say what the destination is.

So I’ll stick to my hypothesis that we’re tool using man rather than thinking man.

Although ‘Prideful man’ works for me as well. The hubris of our species never fails to disturb me.

And having commented on the absence of “Indian” from the choices in the religious affiliation poll, I’m slinking back in here to ask why “Australian Aboriginal” but no “Polynesian/Melanesian”? Any indigenous Hawaiian lizards? American Samoans? Maori Kiwis?
