Switzerland’s Voters Reject Basic Income Plan

Swiss voters have overwhelmingly rejected a proposal to introduce a guaranteed basic income for all.

Final results from Sunday’s referendum showed that nearly 77% opposed the plan, with only 23% backing it.

The proposal had called for adults to be paid an unconditional monthly income, whether they worked or not.

The supporters camp had suggested a monthly income of 2,500 Swiss francs (£1,755; $2,555) for adults and also SFr625 for each child.

If a basic income ever comes into existence in The West it will probably be a country where Catholicism is the main religion.

In the Protestant countries work is part of the religion and is as much a form of worship as it is a practical activity.

It’s a horrendous idea likely to encourage idleness in the public and bankruptcy in the government. The Swiss were right to reject it resoundingly.

The Swiss have a basic guaranteed minimum pension, which I find reasonable and humane at the same time. But the guaranteed minimum income will remain a pipe dream until the day that cyberautomation makes human labor generally superfluous.

Could also happen in a Muslim Country first, as there is a precedent for it.

The first Muslim caliph, Abu Bakr, introduced a guaranteed minimum standard of income, granting each man, woman, and child ten dirhams annually; this was later increased to twenty dirhams.

In one of the most expensive countries to live.

It’s been proven that paying the criminal element a monthly wage, as it were, as long as they don’t commit crimes, has reduced crime tenfold. They did that experiment somewhere here in the states.

Or it could happen in Catholic nation with a heavy Muslim minority, or vice versa, that is well developed.

France would fit, except for the tolerant part.
