It doesn’t matter. All they really want in someone to wave a big American Flag in their faces, and get as much JEEZUS into schools and Ten Commandements statues onto courthouse steps as humanly possible. They will settle for that and be happy.

So much is said on my FB feed from friends and acquaintances from my youth with their posted memes usually centered around a portrait of praying hands captioned: “No matter what, it is in the Lord’s Hands.” Or variations of that. BTW, The American Flag is as much a part of their Evangelical religion as a cross is. It is a full-fledged religious icon.

That is true for the conservative base. But don’t paint the swing voters with the same brush. They’re chiefly upset that the recovery of the economy mostly benefit the cities while rural communities are still stuck in the recession and ignored. They chose Trump because they felt Obama didn’t do enough to help them, and didn’t want more of the same via HRC.

And yes, many of them know he’s a racist, sexist idiot. But they chose to ignore or rationalize it, much the same way liberals had done with drone strikes or the expansion of NSA surveillance under Obama’s administration, or (a bit retro) Bill Clinton’s sex scandals. Because the “greater good” is more important to each of us.

If they think trump is going to help anyone but himself, they’re in for a rude awakening.

I’m tired of hearing they voted for economic reasons as if they are the only people ever hurt economically. Black people, brown people, and women have been economic hurt for centuries because these people rigged the system in their favor. 48% of Trump voters made over $250,000 a year. 72% of Trump supporters made over $72,000 a year. The majority of Trump voters voted to stick it to liberals for putting a black man in the White House. They voted to screw over women racial, and sexual minority groups again. If there are poor white rural people hurt by bad economic conditions they can blame themselves for that because they always vote for the GOP who created their poor economic conditions and prevent the Democrats from fixing anything. So really fuck their feelings. Now the entire US gets turned into Kansas and those people won’t even have the luxury of social programs to help them get by. So fuck their feelings. I’m done with trying to understand them or empathize with them. They don’t give a shit about me or my family.

Non-sequitur. The problems faced by PoC don’t make the problems faced by rural communities any less real. The existence of these problems are not either/or. This wasn’t a competition of whose problems mattered more, until we made it so by dismissing and ignoring them.

48% of Trump voters made over $250,000 a year. 72% of Trump supporters made over $72,000 a year.

You’re quoting figures from a pre-election poll. And we’ve just seen that there are alot of people whom those pollsters didn’t account for. This is why science requires peer-review and repeat studies.

The majority of those who voted for Trump lived in rural communities. The middle class is almost non-existent there. Even taking into account that the majority of Americans didn’t vote, how is it mathematically possible for the majority of Trump supporters to be as well off as you believe?

You should try talking to people outside of your comfort zone, instead of retreating to whatever confirms your bias.

They voted to screw over women racial, and sexual minority groups again.

And we screwed over civilians overseas being killed by drone strikes when we reelected Obama, whom we knew was doing it. We all put our own needs ahead of the lives of distant strangers. You’re paying one-sided lip-service to altruism to excuse perpetrating political polarization.

Edit: also, alot of women and minorities voted for Trump. Think about that bit of context. How does it fit into your preconceptions?

If there are poor white rural people hurt by bad economic conditions they can blame themselves for that because they always vote for the GOP who created their poor economic conditions and prevent the Democrats from fixing anything.

From their pov, the Obama administration had eight years to fix this, and didn’t even try. They don’t care about who’s to blame. They care about who’s going to fix it. Trump was talking about bringing back manufacturing jobs, while Clinton was promising more of the same policies that only benefit cities.

Now the entire US gets turned into Kansas and those people won’t even have the luxury of social programs to help them get by.

What Trump and republicans have sold them is snake oil, this is true. But desperate people besieged by rampant unemployment, addiction, and suicide, will try anything.

I’m done with trying to understand them or empathize with them. They don’t give a shit about me or my family.

I don’t think you were trying in the first place. You heard one poll that confirmed your bias, and treated it as gospel truth. You focused only on what Obama did right, and ignored his flaws. That includes how the benefits of economic recovery went entirely to cities, and left rural America to rot. You didn’t give a crap about them before, so don’t act surprised that the feeling was mutual.

Again, these economic problems weren’t either/or, until we made them either/or. This is what political polarization has done. Maybe I’m just talking out of my own privilege here, but you need to realize that perpetrating this mindset out of spite won’t solve these conflicts. It will just make them worse.
