Professor Shields’ book, Mosul before Iraq, analyzes the economy and society of nineteenth-century Mosul (currently in northern Iraq) and the region surrounding it. Relevant articles have been published in International Journal of Middle East Studies (1991), New Perspectives on Turkey (1992), Journal of Social History (1992), and Turkish Studies Association Bulletin (1993).
Dr. Shields’ current research explores the creation of national identities in the Middle East between the two world wars.
She teaches a broad survey of Islamic civilization, not restricted geographically to the Middle East, as well as topical courses on Middle East Women, the Arab-Israeli conflict, and the modern Middle East.
