There are so many crazy people on both the left and the right. This is a big reason why I particularly appreciate President Obama: it seems like he’s one of the very few adults in the room. If you read The Audacity of Hope (which, notwithstanding what Fox News says, is a book about politics, not a personal memoir) it’s quite a voice of centrism and moderation.

I wonder what will happen when Obama leaves office, and isn’t there to hold things together for the rest of us. As we saw in 2008, when Sarah Palin got 46% of the vote, things can go horribly wrong.

Notwithstanding today’s comical Stop Watching Us rally, I remain more concerned about loonies on the right, compared with the left, simply because the right-wing crazies are in positions of real power, as we saw recently when they shut down the government.
