It’s all a rich and complex tapestry of fuckery. I was talking to an Orthodox friend of mine the other day, about why the Orthodox Churches have even shittier views on women and gay people than the Catholic Church (though it’s a hard-fought battle), and he posited that it was mostly cultural, that the Catholic Church at least had to slightly deal with the Enlightenment in ways that the Orthodox Churches didn’t.

I still think that the Catholic Church, especially in the US, has become more extremist over the past decades than it was before, with the focus switching more and more from poverty to how bad the gays are and those troublesome nuns and abortion. I think this may be because they’re in competition with the Evangelicals, but it’s still pretty shitty.
