On one hand, we can see him as a hero for never giving up and maintaining his code of honor at all costs, but on the other hand, the code itself he was upholding, Bushido, is total horseshit.

I have a similar view of individual Confederate soldiers who volunteered to fight for what they thought was right, although the entire idea and ideology of the Confederacy was also nonsense.

Yep. He also killed 30 people during his 29 years of holding out, though the Philippines government gave him a pardon on that.
