What’s interesting is that in the new book Atticus managed in the past to get Robinson acquitted. Therefore presumably Robinson isn’t shot and killed while trying to escape prison.

We can therefore view the new novel as taking place in an alternate universe, one where that success managed over time to ruin Atticus’s views on race, because he was given a false sense of progress early on instead of having to confront yet again the horrible toll his community’s racism exacts. It’s reasonable to think that the Atticus from TKaM never would have grown into the Atticus from GSaW, because the failure to acquit Robinson and Robinson’s death helped reinforce his understanding of institutional racism. Instead his success made him amenable to the the anti civil rights movement.

Anyway that’s how I see it. Also this mirror universe version of Atticus has a goatee because Star Trek tell us that’s how this shit works.
