A pleonasm is like a tautology without the two terms being congruent.
So, saying someone is an “educated guy with a PhD”, that’s a pleonasm, since anyone with a PhD is educated. But it’s not a tautology, since they don’t mean the same thing. Saying someone was a jarhead Marine would be a tautology, since the two terms mean the same thing.
