I’d have fewer qualms about culturally sensitive police headscarfs if there were also visible, culturally sensitive efforts to support Muslim women who are victims of misogyny.

Who says there aren’t such efforts?

Britain has Domestic Violence shelters and outreach— and honestly, the best way to help women within an oppressive, religious, insular subculture is to have women present who are ‘friendly’ and approachable. In a religious subculture it helps that they observe the outward forms of respect. They’re role models for the scared young women who have known no other from of life and the hijab actually makes them less intimidating and more approachable.
