The GOP has spent decades creating a base of easily manipulated voters who care about their resentments more than anything else. Furthermore, there has also been decades of right wing propaganda to the effect that the rich are better than everyone else. Finally, wealth is power, and RWNJs love to submit to authority in the hopes that some will rub off on them.

All of this creates absolutely perfect conditions for a rich grifter like Trump to come in and grab the entire GOP base for his own ends (like the pied piper).
