This is, I think, the knot at the heart of our disinformation crisis: bad faith. These beliefs are not always sincerely-held; they are, instead, a kind of lifestyle that exists beyond a world of evidence and reason.

It is about posturing.

Nobody wanted to alienate those people who really believe in Birtherism because they make up a solid share of the GOP base.
