Being an American is in your heart and in the ideals that you hold dear. It doesn’t matter what you look like. That is the beauty of America. Our diversity is self evident - just look at any assemblage of Americans - we come in all colors and backgrounds. It is the heart and the ideals that unite us and those should be the only things we focus on.

I would emphasize that assimilation is the overall concept that has made America a great country. Diversity allows groups to retain their cultural identity; in some cases, it results in failure/refusal to assimilate.
