Actually, thanks to one of my heroes, A. Phillip Randolph, socialist union leader, the US army was ordered to desegregate in 1948 and started doing so in earnest in 1951. There was still a ton of crap for black military members to deal with, but by the end of the 50s black officers commanding white men wasn’t uncommon.
