re: #97 Shiplord Kirel

Has anyone met a really rabid Romney fan? Plenty of people are wildly enthusiastic about Obama. Sarah Palin has her ardent admirers. Santorum had a contingent who were positively foamy in their admiration. Even Perry can rile the fundy masses, at least briefly. And Ron Paul, well, we won’t even talk about him.

Romney is the first major candidate I can remember that nobody is especially passionate about. The base backs him as the lesser of two evils and because he is white. The establishment accepts him as the only tool in the box right now. Democrats think he is more a buffoon than a sinister Nixon-like figure. It is a triumph of banality and mediocrity.

Nobody was very excited about McCain either. Even Bush’s support was fairly luke warm both in 2000 and 2004. Also note how quickly even the luke warm Bush support evaporated after the last election. Republicans haven’t been excited about a candidate since Reagan.
