re: #98 makeitstop

I remember the Model Ts. That’s when Sunn finally wised up and started building 4x12” cabinets that were square like Marshalls. Prior to that, they had the speakers staggered and the cabinets were enormous.

Mountain had a Sunn endorsement with the older cabinets. West and Pappalardi each used three heads and six cabinets, and they’d stack them with a cabinet on the bottom, then the head, then another cabinet on top, turned upside down.

I felt bad for their crew having to hoist those cabinets. And if the stack had fallen over, they might have killed someone.

Did you hear how Sunn got started?

It was the brother of the bass player in The Kingsmen. After they started getting bigger gigs due to the popularity of Louie Louie bassist Norm Sundholm and his brother Conrad worked to build a bigger more powerful bass amp. They built them in their garage. Then they caught on and so they moved out of the garage and started SUNN Musical Equipment Co.
