No, the tartans existed. They just weren’t associated with clans, and with ancestry. If your family moved from one place to another, they’d just buy the tartans there when their old ones wore out. It wasn’t an ancestral pride thing.

The clan tartan craze started during Queen Victoria’s reign, if I am not mistaken.
