I’m all for that and wish that things like it would be expanded.* It’s the turn off all the power and sit in the dark for an hour at night “event” that they can blow out their ass.

For large lead-acid batteries (car/truck/ATV/garden), AutoZone and Advance Auto accepts them, even if you’re not buying another one from them; IIRC, both of them even give you store credit ($5-10) for them to spend however, if it’s not being turned in for a core charge refund on another battery.

For NiCd and lithium batteries, such as for phones, tools, etc., Home Depot accepts those, in addition to fluorescent bulbs; the one by my house has a collection box right inside the front door.
