The accountants took over the company and not for the better. Instead of doing the right thing, they did the cost-benefit analysis and decided it cheaper to move ahead with a seriously flawed design, concealed the problems from pilots, tried a workaround that confounded experienced pilots, led to 100s of deaths, and production lines shut down because no one wants to confront the institutional rot from the top down.

Muilenburg’s departure may be most visible, but it’s not the only head that should roll.
