re: #90 Jay C
OK, TBH, my sympathies (limited as they are) are with Dean Phillips: longshot or not, and however much an asshole as he is, I think he should get his chance on a ballot*. What is the FL Dems’ rationale for not having a primary? Is it a matter of procedure - rules, filing, petitions, etc.? Money (do Parties have to pay for their own primaries)? Something personal (Dean piss off the wrong official somewhere)?
*epic fail or not….
Essentially, the Florida Democratic party says that Phillips did not let them know in time that he was a candidate. They state their rules require the state to submit the names of primary candidates to the state before the end of their state convention which ran from Oct 27-29. Philips annoinced his candidacy on Oct 27 but did not contact the state to inform them he was running until Nov 9 (his words ) or Nov. 22 (the party’s word).
So they submitted to the states with only 1 name on the ballot, State law allows them to not have a primary if only one person is on the ballot.
Sounds to me that Phillips did not have a very good exploratory committee. He started his campaign too late. If he had announced a week earlier, he would have had the state party on the ropes here.
