There is a difference between symbolism and killing thousands of men over 3 days to dedicate a new temple. The Aztecs had their good points, but many of their deeds were utterly evil.

The Aztecs were shitlords, but they were conquered by shitlords who thought nothing of killing hundreds of thousands of people by enslaving them and forcing them to work in mines. That gold was produced rather than a temple is a pretty unimportant distinction.
