‘Duck Dynasty’ verdict analysis: Why A&E backed down

insidetv.ew.com

“But what probably helped turn the tide in the Robertsons’ favor was that the debate wasn’t as clear-cut as the network and many in the media initially assumed. Robertson and his supporters argued that his anti-gay statements were an extension of his passion for the Bible. Once that frame gained a foothold — that this fight is about religion, and the freedom to endorse biblical teachings — A&E was stuck in the awkward position of appearing to advocate against both its own star and orthodox Christianity (ironic, considering A&E Networks garnered such goodwill from Christians for taking a chance on its The Bible mini-series on History this year).”

Which means to me that bigotry, even—hell, especially—when inspired by the bible, is approved and perfectly fine.

Not in my view. I saw this many, many years ago as a small child and I knew it was as wrong then as it is now, and as wrong as it has been over my lifetime.

Spot on.

I might be wading into this mess at the annual family Christmas gathering later today. I’m sure there’s going to be at least one person complaining about how Robertson’s 1st Amendments were trampled by A&E.

But, yeah, at the end-of-the-day, this is A&E signaling they’re fine with being associated with homophobic religious lunatics. Money trumps endorsing bigotry, I guess.
