There are many case of otherwise intelligent people, experts in their fields, who presume their intelligence/expertise entitles them to be experts in other, completely unrelated fields. William Shockley, Ben Carson, Deepak Chopra, to name three.
I’m sure a lot of the problem is ego. Shockley definitely had a big one, judging from reports of how he dealt with co-workers. Carson is a surgeon, who are often egotistical. Chopra just believes his own press.
