I’m probably wrong, I usually am. I don’t recall Nixon advancing any racist policies once he was elected. My whole beef with him was he couldn’t get the US out of Viet Nam fast enough for my wants, and all the CIA shenanigans.

He really didn’t, all the “Southern Strategy” really was in the beginning was projecting the Dems as supporting the racial strife of the Civil Rights Era and wanting to further divide the country, while Repubs wanted to restore the “peace” that had existed prior to the 1960s. And really, that’s been their sales pitch ever since: “We want to take things back to that era of blissful ignorance that you all remember from your childhoods.”
