There was probably some reality behind that, confusion with some of the marketing methods from the 70s.

Chief of Police in our county seat brought it to the local newspaper when I was still working there. (He got a fax about it that morning from another small town chief of police…)
Newspaper owner/publisher ran it on front page of the newspaper despite my protests that it was fake and had been debunked for decades (and despite the fact that I had written a piece about it in the Columbia Journalism Review more than 10 years earlier).
