It was Medicare he talked about — and that will hurt a lot of his base. Affluent elderly don’t rely on their Social Security benefit so much — and can manage comfortably with reduced income from that source. Medicare is what is essential to them and they will not be happy to learn that the GOP may be hacking away at these benefits. Only the very wealthy can manage without health insurance; the merely affluent need this money to pay for the illnesses that strike us when we are aged.
