He wouldn’t get any traction with that argument, Killgore. You can’t tell an irrational person that they’re losing it and expect them to listen to you. They’ll dismiss your words in the paranoia.

A plea for civility from both sides, containing reminders of what the Dems have done, might do some good. It does not seem as much like an attack and it comes from an unimpeachable source. Such a plea might filter into reader’s consciousness and get them to look at how they are behaving. Remember that when VDH writes a column like that, he does so to try to teach readers moral and political lessons. To do that, you must speak in a manner that gets your audience to listen to you.
