First come, first serve for airline seats apparently didn’t work in this case because the passengers were bumped to make way for United personnel, not for later-arriving passengers.

This news will have no effect on my minimal air travel because I’ve had a rigid no-United rule in place for many years. What did it for me was United’s charming habit of canceling just enough of its many scheduled flights each day between the LA area and the SF bay area to ensure that the remaining flights were always completely full.
