Probably me for making fun of them. They have no way of knowing that I ridicule all stupid people all over the world, with no particular preference for attacking the Lubbock idiocracy. It’s just the stupid concentration nearest at hand.

Seriously, I knew a professor in Denton who had researched this, specifically the origins of hate and arrogance in the localized culture of north Texas, especially the Dallas area. (In terms of cultural history, Lubbock is an outpost of Dallas). According to him, this stems from the heavy influx of refugees from Georgia and the Carolinas into northeastern Texas just after the Civil War. It was this influx that set many of the folk patterns for the root population as it spread westward later in the 19th century. These people tended to be very bitter and angry, with a monumental sense of outraged entitlement and lost honor. As she put it, “If a Dallasite acts like he is going to kill you for daring to be ahead of him in the grocery line, he’s actually angry because Sherman burned grandpappy’s farm. He just doesn’t know that’s the reason. To him, it’s normal, the way he was raised.”
