Major Taylor was born seventeen years earlier. IMO he would be the first, even though he isn’t as well remembered today.
Although, to be fair, he wasn’t universally loved - there are hair-raising tales of post-race narrow escapes from angry, violent mobs pissed off that a black guy trounced all the white guys so badly.
