There is a familiar scenario these days.
A White Trash family gets a moment of media attention, usually through a most regrettable tragedy. The family of Elizabeth Smart has been particularly conspicuous.
A member of the family discovers that s/he has never seen a microphone or camera that s/he doesn’t like. A publicity blitz follows, in which the family and the media compete in making asses of themselves.
Sarah Palin is a weird analog to this. She was not much stuff as Governor of Alaska, then was chosen to the bewilderment of everyone as McCain’s VP candidate. Suddenly, she was on every broadcast except the Food Channel, and she loved it.
She still does.

I’ve never thought of Elizabeth Smart’s family as trash.
