One difference in this one though is the VFW seems to have made their statement right after the event.

If I remember right, the Boy Scouts took some time to realize they had a problem and then made a statement in response. It may have even taken a day or so.

VFW took action. Boy Scouts were putting out a fire.

Organizations may start getting proactive, have talking points prepared for afterward to say that “we’re sorry for the bad behavior of our members due to bad behavior of president, we don’t approve or condone these bad behaviors.”
