No, the tartans existed. They just weren’t associated with clans, and with ancestry. If your family moved from one place to another, they’d just buy the tartans there when their old ones wore out. It wasn’t an ancestral pride thing.

OK, but it still indicated an area did it not, and people did not move a great deal in those days, so one would still likely be associated with one clan or other would it not?

Perhaps it was simply that only later did people start putting the clan names to the tartans, in a more “official” capacity.
