The US government should have come down like a ton of bricks on the Confederates after the war. Things might be different now if they had.

For one, you would not have the pathetic revisionism about what the CSA was established for and the idiots who wave the rebel flag all the while decrying those they hate as being Anti-American. And I’ll say something more stronger here, the rebel flag is more offensive to me as an American than the Soviet Union’s. The CSA resulted in the deaths of much more and a much more higher percentage of Americans than the Soviets could have dreamed of.
