My dad’s military service was at a base on the west coast; he worked in the mess hall, peeling potatoes, cleaning grease traps, and dishing up lunch. He was Beetle Bailey; the only weapon he ever fired was in basic training.
But he got the same GI Bill as people who spent their entire enlistment under fire.
And as StoneKettle says, those are needed positions. As someone once said, “An army marches on its stomach”. A tired, hungry force is fighting an uphill battle.
