You wonder if people that vile on the internet are brave/twisted enough to be that way in person. (Not threatening anyone, mind you, just wondering how deep the lack of character runs).

I think they are. I run into people like that all the time—and they aren’t all conservatives either. Sometimes they just don’t think what they are doing/saying affects real people. They don’t really have a deep seeded hatred, but people unlike themselves are too ‘other’ and they do not identify with them as having the same wants and needs as themselves. Because they do not actively hate the ‘other’ they rationalize that they are not racist.
