Well, they’re still rolling out there in the desert.

Lots of aftershocks, as can be seen on the list, or more graphically on this view of the area.

It appears as if one person is known dead from the quake in Mexico.

The large quake and most of the big aftershocks are in the mountain range, or right next to it, labeled “Cucapa” in the middle of this Google Maps view.

It would be interesting to see the elevation changes in those mountainous areas. They probably fell a bit today. The trench that is opening up along the San Andreas is causing the land to fall (and indeed the bottom of the Salton Sea is essentially at the same elevation below sea level as the lowest part of Death Valley), usually slowly, but sometimes with drama. As Baja is drifting away from Mexico/Arizona, the material in between the spine of Baja and the main part of NA is falling.

Even though we dodged a bullet it remains a sleeping giant.
