Why do they deserve tax exempt status again?

It’s a good policy to have. Catholic organizations especially tend to perform quite a lot of charitable work. Even the reactionaries we’re talking about almost certainly devote a large amount of the money they raise to charities, as well helping poor children get into Catholic schools (which can truly be a lifesaver, in as far as it gains the child access to a much better education than they would have otherwise had).
