The trouble with debit cards is that they don’t have the same protections as credit cards, so if your debit card is compromised, the thieves get whatever is in the account it is attached to.

I tend to try to write checks to small businesses and use my CC at the chains.

Checks are great. They cost me nothing, and nobody has ever bounced one here in my 15 years of business.
