I’m not sure that he had to sneak across. One of my grandfathers emigrated to the US in the late 1890s, and then moved up to Winnipeg, and eventually back to the US. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of paperwork associated with this. I get the feeling the border was pretty open. I could be wrong.

You may be entirely correct. I just learned from family stories that my grandfather - who passed away about 4 hours before my birth - was always terrified about being found out and deported.
