My kids told me today that if there is a lock down and they are outside, they are to run to one of the recess lady’s house that’s right next door. I first thought, damn, it’s sad they have to know that in the first place. My second thought was, hell, just run home! We live 2 blocks away.
My Mom told me the same thing back in grade school when they were going to put cardboard tags around our necks and load us all on school busses to race the shockwave up into the mountains—line of sight all the way—in the event of a nuclear attack. “Just slip away and come on home.” We lived about 3 blocks away, too.
