I’m old enough to remember when “grooming” was called “recruiting”. It was definitely a popular CT flying around in the 1970s.

I still remember Proposition 6 in California; one of the arguments made by its proponents is that gay schoolteachers would use their position to “recruit” straight kids. Fortunately, Prop 6 was defeated.

I grew up in the “Don’t ask, don’t tell” era. It wasn’t gay people that was the problem for our religious wingnuts; it was Satanists. In my high school - a public high school, mind, not a private religious school - my fellow nerds were divided into two groups: Kids whose parents allowed them to play Magic: The Gathering, and kids who were banned from playing because their parents thought it was a gateway to Satanism. Those of us in the latter group played a Star Wars card game instead.
