It’s a statement that is literally vague but can be implied in an infinite number of ways. You can dump 100,000 tons of Cesium or Plutonium in there and ‘nature will correct itself’ in a half life of 23,000 years.

I don’t think we’ll know how long it will take for another year or so. I suspect the effects will last decades(s) but hope I am wrong.

Much of the oil has evaporated, which is why the stopped being able to find it when they got the flow stopped. NOAA hasn’t even found in underwater plumes (from a page I put up yesterday).
The remaining goo washing up onto the beaches can be cleaned up before it sinks into anything.

I suspect in 6 months, news organizations will be oh-so-surprised at how quickly things got back to normal.

Well, except for the lives of the people directly affected. The moratorium and also the lack of permits being issued for ANY wells (including shallow) is bad news, economically, for those folks. That will be the most difficult long-term effect.
