Well you can game that out several ways, some leading to a better outcome, others ending in war.

Nixon doesn’t really strike me as the kinda guy who would have backed down in the same scenario. He and Khrushchev were of the same mind, bullies with overblown egos who looked for signs of weakness in others to exploit.
