Yes, I think it was originally where a lot of Irish immigrants settled and there were mostly older people and poor younger ones even when I was there (most of their kids had already moved to the semi-detached houses in the Northeast and elsewhere). And the politics there were pretty mixed, but you know how those old wards were—the ward workers tried to strong arm people to vote for Nixon (we campaigned for McGovern), and we even discovered there was a Nazi cell in the back of a corner store. Not everyone was like that, though, and I got to attend a couple of great block parties, too. : )

Driving down through there made me realize that for living in the city for six years that I had not seen that much of it.

I walk around in Center City, with some trips into Old Town, Fairmount, or University City. Bicycle up further into Fairmount Park and along a few other trails. Just starting to explore Wissahickon Creek and Forbidden Drive. Beyond that it’s the occasional drive on a secondary road that takes me through some of the other neighborhoods when I opt not to use I-95, I-76, I-676, and the main routes into and out of Philly.
