If the Russians were serious and badass why don’t they just open fire or drive right through, the people be damned?,

Sure media nightmare and you’ll never win hearts and minds that way.

But if your goal is to take the place, then take it.

Putin would. But these soldiers were told they were entering Ukraine as friends and liberators, or told nothing at all. Many of them have friends and relatives in Ukraine. They aren’t monsters.
