The fundamental questions are:
How much should the Federal Government do?
How much of the GDP are we willing to give to government?

The current course we are moving from a Representative Republic to Oligarchy.

Some things the government does better, national defense is the obvious example. The fight has always been how much it should do, or could do better. The fiscal conservatives need to restrain the idea that Uncle Sugar can do everything better.
