re: #105 Obdicut

I wouldn’t be fine with people burning the bible.

You know why?

Because I’m an atheist. And that means that I can, without personal interest, objectively, see that such a thing is done to send a message of hate, of intolerance and, if Christians were a small enough minority, of intimidation.

I don’t want laws against such things, or anything of the sort, but I do want to let the people who do this cowardly shit know that if they do start actively targeting Muslims in the open, that Americans will stand up for them.

I do feel that some of the elements of Nazi Germany are growing in the US. But I know that something else is here in the US; a history of Civil Rights, of disparate groups standing together against intolerance.

It can happen here. But it won’t. Because we’ll fight it.

And i appreciate that - i really do. Because one minute it’s “ha, ha, we’re burning paper” and the next minute it’s “ha ha we’re burning actual structures”.

You are correct, of course. My point was that my not being offended by action X does not, therefore, make it civilized to perform action X. Sometimes the golden rule lets us down.
